The Cape Music Institute (CMI) as launched at Shawco in 12th Avenue, Kensington in 2006.
After a successful pilot year of music training and development, founder Camillo Lombard and his team decided to expand the intake and curriculum to a second year of studies in addition to their new intake.
The CMI currently hosts 80 students and 13 lecturers at their premises at Athlone Stadium.
The curriculum focuses on Music Business, Songwriting, Music Theory, Sound Production, Aural training, Music History, Sight Reading, Music Culture, Ensemble, Stage and Performance Production.
Many students have proceeded to become successful artists, and alumni include Candice Thornton (Winner of Open Mic Competition), Robin Pieters (The Voice SA), Aleshia Adams, Mark Williams, Craig Van Willingh and Roderick McKay.
Artists who rehearsed at the CMI include Judith Sephuma, Loyiso Bala, Alistair Izobell, Tevin Campbell, Sybil, Robin S, Peaches and Herb and Jimmy Nevis.
CMI also hosts one of the Master Class sessions for the Cape Town International Jazz Festival. This year prolific band Moonchild will present a Masterclass at CMI.
