Its that time of year again, the annual Tweede Nuwe Jaar jol is on our doorstep and thousands of mense are expected to fill the streets of Cape Town to join the klopse festivities.
This year the Cape’s biggest jol sees some exciting changes to the traditional Tweede Nuwe Jaar klopse showcase. For starters, the event will take place on Saturday, 4 January 2020, rather than 2 January, as the sunset of that day coincides with Friday Jumu’ah.
But the biggest announcement this year is that MTN South Africa and Samsung will join the City of Cape Town, the Western Cape Government and Coca Cola as partners on the Cape Town Street Parade (CTSP), which is being organised by the Kaapse Klopse Karnival Association (KKKA) for a third consecutive year.
Between 60 000 and 100 000 mense are expected to come see their favourite klopse troupes from all over the Kaap jolling in the streets of the city centre between Hanover Street in District Six and Rose Street in Bo-Kaap.

Here is what you need to know about the 2020 edition of the Cape Town Street Parade:
- The 2020 Cape Town Street Parade will take place on Saturday 4 January 2020 rather than the traditional date of 2 January, as the sunset of 2 January 2020 coincides with the Friday Jum’ah.
- The troupes will march from Hanover Street in District Six and head towards the City Hall, where they will march in a horse-shoe shape onto the Grand Parade and back onto Darling Street. They continue up Darling Street into Adderley Street, up Wale Street to Rose Street in Bo-Kaap. Crowds line the streets along the full route to experience the gees of the colourful musical spectacle.
- Entertainment will be provided on a stage on the Grand Parade in front of City Hall from 12pm. There will be an opening ceremony at around 1pm, with an address by the Mayor of Cape Town, and celebrations will continue up until 10pm.
- The event is free to the public and all the people of Cape Town and visitors to the Mother City are encouraged to be a part of Africa’s largest cultural jol. There are R 100 tickets available from Computicket for the Golden Circle, a cordoned off area which will afford ticket holders some of the best views of the troupes and the entertainment.
- There will be a large number of street closures (See below) and people are encouraged to travel into the city with a drop and go service or to use public transport.
The KKKA/CTSP has also launched a new theme song for the big day.
The song took a few weeks to conceptualise, with all of the different artists and personalities involved. This is the 3rd installment of this project which has grown to a collaboration that includes artist, musicians, producers and coordinators from many different troupes.
The new theme song is called Shake Your Body with lead vocalists Fagrie Isaacs and Adil Dante featuring Shadley Schroeder and rapper Tashreeq De Villiers.
The song is aimed at the rest of South Africa, to say, Come Shake your Body to the Kaapse Klopse Ghoema beat.
The Baruch Entertainers are ready for the Cape Town Street Parade 2018.

KKKA 2020 Theme Song LYRICS
Yesyaa, Is Nuwe Jaar
Die hele land is die kant
Coz’ everybody knows
Cape Town is the place to be
Is hoedtjie tyd, vluitjie uit, don’t be late.
Come and shake your body in the street, To the Kaapse Klopse ghoema beat x2
Kom jol nou, is Tweede Nuwe Jaar, Lekker af Hanover Straat
At the tip of Africa
There’s a minstrel jol in Cape Town
It’s the party of the year
Met die Kaapse Klopse, dis nuwe jaar
You’ve got to be here, to believe it
As we dance the night away
Happy faces, different races
Waiting on the Grand Parade
Are you ready x2
For the Cape Town Street Parade
Come and shake your body in the street, To the Kaapse Klopse ghoema beat x2
Kom jol nou, is Tweede Nuwe Jaar, Lekker af Hanover Straat
Op n Tweede Nuwe jaar
Raak die Kaap so deurmekaar
Al die Klopse kom van ver
Kyk hoe blink hulle klopse gear
Die gummie klop klop
Die dansers skop skop
Dit is Tweede Nuwe Jaar
Happy faces, different races
Waiting on the Grand Parade
Are you ready x2
For the Cape Town Street Parade
Come and shake your body in the street, To the Kaapse Klopse ghoema beat x2
Kom jol nou, is Tweede Nuwe Jaar, Lekker af Hanover Straat
Yes ja Tweede Nuwe Jaar
Die is die grootste jol in Afrika
Wit man, swart man, don’t be skaam
Want die coloured in satin bring die nasie saam
Jirre, die straat is vol
Everyone is happy, is n lekker jol.
Uniting the nation with music and colour
No matter your race im still your brother
Say Kaapstad (Kaapstad)
Is Sop Nat (Sop Nat)
Now Shake Shake (Shake Shake)
Now Somebody Scream
Come and shake your body in the street, To the Kaapse Klopse ghoema beat x4
Kom jol nou, is Tweede Nuwe Jaar, Lekker af Hanover Straat
