Cape Town entrepreneur Sue-Kelly Maneveld is a woman of many talents and the latest feather in her cap is that of a singer.
The owner of Be-Dazzle Hair Beauty and Slimming Salon also runs her own importing company, is a final-year law student and is about to release her debut music album, called Medicine.
She goes by the nickname Shiny, and previously shared beauty tips with Daily Voice readers.
Sue-Kelly started writing and recording her songs in 2013 and is now finally ready to release her album.
“I used to perform for neighbours as a child and the passion grew,” she says.
“I always had a passion for writing poems and music. My parents didn't see it as a career and encouraged me to do something viable.
“I went into hair and beauty, but once things fell into place eight years ago I started writing music again.
“I recorded my first song eight years ago so it's been in the pipeline for a long time.”
She refuses to be boxed into a genre and calls her music “poetic pop”.
“I love all types of music, but I don't follow anyone so this is my own kind of music. I'm a trendsetter, not a follower, I can call it poetic pop.”
She hopes Medicine will be an antidote for listeners as the world battles with the pandemic: “Things have been rough for all of us. I want my music to bring that ease and comfort during these tough and trying times.”
Sue-Kelly, who has only 50% function of her lungs as a result of TB, says she has to mentally and physically prepare for recording days.
“I came out of hospital two weeks ago. Doctors discovered a hole in my lung. Half of my lungs are working, so it's a lot to prepare for when I go into recording.
“I see myself as a broken butterfly trying to fly.”
The album is available on all digital platforms and her music video is available on YouTube.
