Hundreds of Mitchells Plain women waited in anticipation as Cape Town Mayor Dan Plato’s Women’s Month roadshow kicked off with a “drive-by” on Monday.
Dressed in black, and sporting pink masks and pink sashes, the women lined up in Spine Road at several intersections where they stood armed with placards reading “You’re A Diamond Dear, They Cannot Break You, I’m Aware That I Am Rare and This Girl Is On Fire”.
Plato used the opportunity to raise awareness around Gender-Based Violence and also spread some joy to the women who had gathered along the streets as part of Women’s Month celebrations.
“The drive-by for women was to make them feel special and just do a quick catchup and selfie session. It was refreshing being able to be out there again while trying hard to maintain social distancing,” the mayor told the Daily Voice.
The ladies didn’t mind waiting in the wind for two hours for Plato, who arrived with goodie bags stuffed with chocolates and toiletries.
Valerie Moses, 70, who organised the women in Rocklands, had quite a party going on the corner of Spine and Merrydale roads.
“We are happy to see the mayor coming out to us, it was a really nice gesture.
“We stood here long, but it was worth it to see how much the ladies enjoyed the music and dancing by the city’s dance group.”
DJ Skouers was the MC, while the dancers did the Jerusalema Challenge with the ladies.
