Community activist Joanie Fredericks teamed up with comedian Marc Lottering to do a mask distribution drive in Mitchells Plain.
They launched the #HoesSoentoe campaign and did a convoy through Tafelsig on New Year’s Eve to hand out masks to people in the streets.
Vannie Kaap and Sew Crazy donated the masks after Marc approached them to join the campaign to reduce the risk of Covid-19 transmission in the poor community.
An emotional Joanie told the Daily Voice that she is chuffed by the response and action of local celebs who want to help her.
“It’s really special that these celebrities can come out to Tafelsig to help me in my vision to bring awareness and save lives during Covid-19.”
She honoured Marc for his humility in serving
“You can choose to put your feet up and hide away from this devastating second wave of coronavirus like so many others, or you can come to the battle ground to be at the forefront of helping us fight a killer virus of which no one understands the true extent.
“You bring your friends with you and you say to them, please help the Tafelsig community.
“When the president made the announcement, and rightly so, that each of us will be held accountable for wearing our mask, he did not see it fit to send the masks with the warning into the communities...he left it up to us.”
Marc says there’s a great need for masks in poorer communities as people simply cannot afford to keep buying them.
“This is not the last mask drive, we will definitely be back with more. Sadly we ran out of masks today, but we will be back. Thank you to everyone who came to Joanie’s aid,” he said.
