This magician says lockdown has given him a chance to expand his brand on a global stage and now wants to share his success story to encourage other artists.
Regardt Laubscher, an interactive comedy magician, says he’s extremely busy and does about 40 shows per month.
With lockdown making it impossible to have audience interaction, Regardt thought he was done for.
“Shows were cancelled, it felt like my heart was ripped from my chest,” he says.
Regardt, who had previously been invited to perform for the likes of Mariah Carey, says when lockdown started, he celebrated his 36th birthday and in the run up to it, posted videos on social media: “Everyone was down in the dumps and I wanted to cheer people up and entertain.”
This gave him the idea to change the format of his shows.
“The biggest challenge was not putting a show together, but now I had to also build the set, set up cameras, get the lighting and sound right, make sure internet connectivity is fast and then still perform.

“I did not have a live audience so I changed my magic shows to exclude interaction.
“The magic tricks are way different now, it’s more self-focused instead of calling up to the stage to be part of the act.

“Three months later and I have done shows across Africa. I even visited Seychelles and did a quick pop-in in London - all via my online shows.
“I have been so successful, not just with “traditional” magic performances, but with workshops, edutainment, and even a special performance about my biggest obstacle yet, Covid-19.”
