A Blackheath man, who feeds up to 600 people a day from his tiny one-room granny flat, says he is now being evicted because he can’t keep up with the rent.
The unemployed father of two, who appeared in the Daily Voice on 29 July, says his rent is R1300 a month but since the start of lockdown, he was only able to pay half the rent.
In April, a desperate Jason de Vries took to Facebook to ask for help to buy food for his hungry girlfriend and two young children.
The 29-year-old said he lost his job as a spray painter due to the lockdown.
He said a man who saw his post sent him R10 000 but instead of keeping the money for himself, Jason decided to buy groceries and hand out food parcels.
He says after the money was spent, more donors stepped forward to help him feed children, the elderly and disabled people in Blackheath.
But now Jason is faced with the dilemma of finding a new home before Saturday as his landlord is kicking him out.
“I know God will provide for me but I’m worried about the children who need to be fed. If I leave, they will be without food,” he says.
“People queue outside of my house daily for food.”
Jason says he is able to do spray painting work and odd jobs for anyone who can assist him with funds to help pay his rent.
When the Daily Voice visited Jason’s tiny home on Wednesday, the room was warm and cosy because he was busy cooking two large pots of rice and lentils for the fish biryani he was serving for lunch.

I’m a prayer warrior with Uncle Jason, I like the food he makes for us, it’s always very delicious and I learn about respect and having good manners from him.”
Jason says his rent is R1300 plus R100 for electricity.
