Entertainer Kim Gustafson is famous for her theatrical roles and above all, playing Lucy in the hit musical Kat and the Kings.
The Steenberg mom is now starring in her first film, at the age of 44, and says one is never too old to learn and try new things.
Kim will star as Debbie in the new Nagvlug Productions film, Nativity.
The film centres on a Cape Town community trying to save their local hall from being closed down permanently, and plan a fundraiser in the form of a Nativity play.
The film, which airs on Showmax this month is written and directed by Bianca Flanders.
Bianca, from Rondebosch, says: “I sent my proposal to M-Net and luckily it was chosen to be made.
“Nativity was inspired by my own culture and the community I lived in for the last few years.
“I wanted to write about real people, characters that we don’t always see on TV but people that all of us would meet or perhaps already know in life.
“I struggled to cast the character of Debbie. I saw so many wonderful actors but none of them were quite right.
“Kim’s was the last audition I watched and I knew immediately, this is Debbie.”
Debbie is the choreographer who directs the dancing for the Nativity play and Kim says she was overwhelmed when she got the role.
“I said it almost feels like Broadway New York 23 years ago,” says Kim.
“It was hard coming from the stage into a multi-camera environment.
“I was afraid of how big my performances are on stage and now having to minimise it for the camera.”
The mom of two says it is wonderful to see young women of colour making strides in the local film industry.
“I’m proud to have done this film under Bianca’s direction. As a young woman of colour, she is amazing.”
