BOOTY-SHAKER: Uncle Cal, Vuvu Kumalo

Uncle Cal is dedicating his new single, called Without You, to the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign.

The DJ and entertainer collaborated with singer Vuvu Khumalo on the song, which he says is reminiscent of female empowerment tracks like Gloria Gaynor’s I Will Survive, Aretha Franklin’s Respect and Cher’s Strong Enough.

Uncle Cal tells the Daily Voice: “This lockdown has been a daunting experience for many people.

“Everyone is dealing with their own struggles and I was hoping that Without You would become one of the country’s go-to pick-me-up tracks, but I never realised that deep in the throes of 16 Days of Activism, how relevant the lyrics of this song would become.

“The lyrics say, ‘the way that you hurt me, you just don’t deserve me, baby I can live without you’.”

Cal explains that the booty-shaker track is about a woman who takes her power back after being in an abusive relationship.

Vuvu says the track has a message of hope and empowerment for anyone who needs a reminder that they have the strength to move forward, especially from a bad situation.

“Without You is about knowing that you have what it takes, no matter who you are, to stand on your own,” she says.

Uncle Cal co-wrote the song 10 years ago with bass player Aubrey Arries of Funny Carp, but couldn’t find the right singer to do it justice.

“When I met Vuvu, I knew she was the perfect artist who embodied that star quality to bring it to life,” he says.

Cal brought in former hip hop artist and producer, Storm FX, to add a Cape Goema flavour and disco undertone to the mix.

The song is available for download on platforms such as iTunes, Google Play, Amazon, Deezer and Spotify.
