Meet Cape Town’s youngest female DJ.
Six-year-old Sophia Petersen from Athlone took the Baby Shark phenomenon to the next level two years ago, but since then she’s ventured into various genres of music and is rocking it.
The little girl is a ball of cuteness, but is serious and focused when she does her DJ set.
Her proud dad Ian Petersen, a part-time DJ, runs his own business, Libra Scale Entertainment, and says Sophia first showed interest in his DJ equipment when she was four years old.
“She started playing around with the equipment not knowing what she was doing at the time,” he says.
“Soon thereafter I taught her how to utilise the equipment. She is like a sponge, she is a fast learner.
“She is able to identify songs she wants to use, then load it and play it, she knows how to blend one song into another.
“She has a habit of watching me practise and then applying it when she gets her turn to play.”
The Grade 1 learner won a DJ competition at her school when she was in Grade R.
“The competition was held at an under-18s party in Retreat, and there was a category for primary school and high schoolkids,” says Ian.
“She won her category in her age group, but ultimately she just enjoys being a DJ and entertaining people.”
Sophia tells the Daily Voice: “My favourite genres are hip hop and RnB, my favourite song right now is Go Crazy by Chris Brown.
“I love playing music and the way it makes me feel. I like to see people dance to the music I play and during lockdown I liked seeing people’s reactions when I play live on my Daddy’s Facebook page, especially when people send through Spongebob emojis. I like Spongebob,” the cute little girl adds.
Sophia also enjoys playing basketball, soccer, doing gymnastics and swimming and gardening with her oupa.
“Oh, and my other favourite song is the Cha-Cha Slide, I love to do the dance moves,” she adds.
