A Mitchells Plain mom has created a community garden to try and beautify her neighbourhood.
Reva Fortune from Tafelsig says she started her garden in Stella Street about a year ago: “This used to be a piece of land that was full of dirt. I decided to start a food garden so I can help where I can, because I know how my community sukkel to survive.”
Reva says she’s not making money from the garden but simply wants to feed the needy.
She has planted colourful sunflowers for people to enjoy, as well as a variety of vegetables such as potatoes, tomatoes, butternut and squash which she donates to those in need for free.
“I know this is a dangerous place (Tafelsig) so this garden is a way of bringing peace and tranquillity to my people,” she says.
She says it also helps with rehabilitating of bandiete who has been released from jail.
“I get help from former inmates in this garden and it is my way of giving back to my community,” she says.
However, Reva says skollies are not helping her cause: The skollies break in every second day and steal anything they can get their hands on from the fence to bath tubs.
“I would love to get any help I can get from anyone because I want to create a park for children to enjoy themselves instead of roaming the streets,” she says.
She also added that whatever she is getting from the garden she feeds to those who are in need.
