CHANGE OF ART: Comedian Carl Weber

Comedian Carl Weber is tapping into his creative side to make ends meet.

“Carl me Picasso,” he jokes.

Carl says he started painting a week ago and when he posted his creation on Facebook, he didn't expect the kwaai response from fans and followers.

“People went bos and soema wanted to buy the painting, I only made this one,” he says, referring to the painting of the ballerina.

An emotional Carl says he is going through a tough time financially after gigs dried up due to the lockdown.

“I used to paint 15 years ago and I stopped, but picking up a paintbrush again made me realise how much I love it.

“I wanted to paint again just to take my mind off everything. It’s been tough with the comedy industry being down.

“Painting calms me, so I got a blank canvas, bought some paints, watched a YouTube tutorial and painted ‘Ballet by Moonlight’.

“My wife posted it on Facebook and people started making offers to buy it, and then I sold my first painting this week. So now I’ve found a new income stream.”

Carl says he sold the painting for R200, “but the couple who bought it said they wanted to pay double because it was worth more to them”.

He uses acrylic paint, paintbrushes, sponges, foil and even old newspapers to add texture to his paintings.

He jokes: “Someone asked me if I can paint their dog, but I don’t like painting dogs, man, the paint isn’t healthy for their skin.”

Carl says with South Africa now in lockdown Level 1, comedy gigs are picking up again.
