Cape Town filmmaker Weaam Williams has bagged yet another international win for her doccie District Six Rising from the Dust.
The film was awarded Best Documentary at the Beyond the Curve International Film Festival in France, and comes just four months after winning the Florence Film Award for Best Original Story.
The latest win means that the film will stream on the festival’s platform from 25 to 30 June, where mense can watch it for free.
Weaam and her husband Nafia Kocks completed the film towards the end of 2019 and previously screened it locally.
The hour-long doccie unpacks the art, history and social landscape of Cape Town’s most remembered district through Weaam’s eyes.
The mother of two tells the Daily Voice that this is her third international win and the documentary has been selected to participate in festivals and competitions in India, Turkey, Italy, the US, Australia and France.
“All of these festivals reached out to me on social media and provided me with a considerable fee waivers,” says Weaam.
“I’m incredibly happy about this win because now it means my people in South Africa can watch it.
“District Six Rising from the Dust is not just a film about the past, but rather a film for the future of District Six. It is inextricably linked to the cause of the return of the people to the land,” says Weaam.
She is currently working on a Bo-Kaap documentary called The Rise and says: “The Rise looks at gentrification through the eyes of three generations of women. We plan to finish it in the next six months.”
