HAPPY: Uncle Harold getting his free haircut
Strandfontein barber and founder of Groomed for Change, Warren Theunis, is offering free haircuts for seniors today.
The 40-year-old father of one, who lives in Claremont, says the initiative is part of his annual Seniors Activation.
Warren has already cut the hair of 3012 golden oldies and aims to up that number.
It will take place at The Village Barbershop today from 9am to 12pm and Warren will be assisted by three other barbers.
“The seniors get very little money, and somehow they have to survive on that budget,” he says.
“My haircut in Strandfontein cost R60-R70 and that can buy bread for the entire month.
“By removing the cost of a haircut, they get to save that cost, without compromising their appearance.
“I get the opportunity to make them look and feel a whole lot better and show them that they are not forgotten in this world.
“So currently we have done 3016 haircuts for free since inception and we are looking to bring that total up to 3100.
Warren previously owned a barbershop at the Blou Dakke in Strandfontein, where he used to host his monthly fellowship sessions with the elderly.
“They would come to my barbershop in Strandfontein from all over Cape Town,” he says.
“As many as 70 seniors would gather on the last Wednesday of the month and enjoy not only the service offering but the company and the stories. This is how the Groomed for Change project was born.”
Musician Claire Phillips will serenade the ou ballies while they get their haircut.
