Premium Sports Bar in Mitchells Plain was dripping in red, white and yellow on Sunday as the annual Liverpool and Manchester United clash was beamed around the world to soccer fanatics.
Premium Sports Bar is home to the Official Liverpool Supporters Club in Cape Town, and this was brought home by having a white coffin and hearse draped in Man United vlaggies.
There was even a replica of the Premier League Trophy on display.
Owner William Goliath says the highly anticipated annual battle - ending in a goalless draw - between the archrivals usually attracts 1500 fans to the pub.
But this year was different as Covid-19 cancelled all social gatherings and he had to come up with a new plan.
“Usually we would have set up big tents with big screens all over, we would have a lekker braai and afterparty with DJs.
“But this time we had to play it safe.”
William said while they encouraged mense to watch the match from home, they decided to set up a photo booth with kwaai props for fans to do a “drive-by photoshoot”.
People paid R50 per picture and the money made is all going towards the financial contribution for Mitchells Plain District Hospital frontline workers.
“Premium Sports Bar teamed up with a friend Joe Hendricks who is a funeral planner at Joe4Funerals,” he says.
“The setup was done by Joe and our aim was to create a photo experience where people could come and have their photo taken with their favourite team memorabilia which included gazebos, candles, cakes, wall banners, coffins and some of the vehicles that Joe has made available.
“We made just a little over R4000 and our aim is to provide meals to the frontline staff at Mitchells Plain District Hospital.”
