HOLIDAY: Yanga Sobetwa, Thando Mngomezulu and Thato Makape are in Top 3 HOLIDAY: Yanga Sobetwa, Thando Mngomezulu and Thato Makape are in Top 3
In a nailbiting run-up to the finals, the Cape’s last hope in Idols SA won over the hearts of the judges.
Delft songbird Yanga Sobetwa, 16, is the last Cape Town contestant standing and is ONE show away from landing a position in the top two.
On Monday, she and fellow contestants Thato Makape and Thando Mngomezulu flew to Dubai for a lekker week-long holiday to relax and rejuvenate.
Idols spokesperson Irvin Pooe said: “It’s a treat to congratulate the Top 3 Idols contenders. We’re going for a holiday, with sightseeing, including visiting sites where music videos were made.”
Sunday night saw the Top 4 contenders perform a live duet with the show’s alumni.
Yanga was paired with Season 8 winner Khaya Mthethwa to deliver the Disney classic, Beauty and the Beast.
Randall called it “the most appropriate song” for the teenager, while Unathi called it her “duet of the night”.
Khaya said he was proud to be performing with Yanga, who said he was her favourite.
Yanga closed off the show with Khaya Mthethwa’s Mkulumsebenzi. The judges loved her ability to seamlessly move from one style to another, and Somizi encouraged her to “keep coming with guns blazing”.
But it was koebaai for King B in spite of a “soulful” duet of Smother - the original hit by last year’s The Voice winner Craig Lucas and Idols 2017 winner Paxton Fielies - with Season 11 runner-up, Mmatema.
Unathi loved it for being “soulful, sexy and sensuous”.
This, after a record 16-and-a-half million votes over the past week.
Season 11 winner Karabo and Thando’s rendition of The Closer I Get to You, “hypnotised” Somizi.
Randall termed the Thato’s duet with former contestant, Amanda Black, on Ngamthanda Umuntu, “salt and vinegar. It’s something you don’t expect to work but it does”.
Next week, Mzansi will see a face-off between Yanga, Thando and Thato. To vote for Yanga SMS 10 to 37400.
Idols SA airs on DStv Channel 161 Sundays, 5 pm.
