The only son of the late music icon Taliep Petersen has rebooted one of his dad’s hits and plans to release the music video on Eid ul Fitr on Friday.
Ashur Petersen says the remake of the song, titled Eid Mubarak, is a tribute to his late dad for Father’s Day on Sunday, while at the same time paying homage to Muslims in war-torn countries who will not enjoy the festival celebrating the end of Ramadaan.
“This is all for my father. I tried to revive this song and launch it in time for Eid and Father’s Day,” says the 25-year old.
The original song was written by Taliep and film and television producer Munier Parker over 20 years ago.
Ashur says he’s added a few new lyrics of his own to this remix.

“The reason I decided to include a music video is because social media is such a huge platform and a lot of the time it is used for a lot of negativity,” says Ashur.
“I just wanted to do something good or show some positivity in the world. So I hope this makes him proud. This would have been my Father’s Day gift to him.”
Ashur says the song was created to make the listener feel a sense of hope and peace, but at the same time invoke empathy and awareness.
“We appreciate and know we are truly blessed to be able to have had a peaceful month of Ramadaan and a joyous Eid, whereas the mothers, fathers and children of Palestine, Syria and Gaza don’t have this kind of freedom.”
The music video has a cast of 20, and it was shot over two days last week in Bo-Kaap.
