Celebs came out in their numbers on Saturday to support a community event in Mitchells Plain where they went head to head, or rather ball to bat, with the locals.
The organisation Unchain The Plain 7785 held a Celebs vs Community street cricket day at Beacon Hill High School and famous faces such as Donveno Prins and his wife Ronel, Alistair Izobel, Devanish and his partner Juanita Cloete, Sebastian Petersen, actors, social media personalities and politicians all stieked uit to play with the laaities.
Unchain The Plain (UTP) also handed over bats that were donated by the Pakistan Cricket Fraternal for Street Cricket.
The event started with the kids and later the celebrities' wives playing against each other.
The highlight of the tournament was when the legendary musicians took on the Unchain The Plain organisers.
Prizes, medals and gifts were handed out to the excited laaities at the end of the day.
Unchain The Plain is a foundation that collects sporting equipment with the aim of distributing it in various areas.
They first started with Mitchells Plain, but have since expanded their reach.
Project manager Juven Rittles, 50, says they would love to bring street games back.
“We remain a Mitchells Plain-based organisation but also work in Worcester, Darling, Khayelitsha, Gugulethu, Hanover Park and Kraaifontein.

“We believe that sports play a holistic role in the rearing of kids.
“The aim is to get our children to play again and to occupy the open spaces. We need to push back, we can't let gangsters hold us hostage in our own communities,” he says.
Donveno says it was an honour to attend the event: “It was really cool getting together for a worthy cause. It’s good to invest in the young people, they need to be inspired to work towards achieving better.
“It was heartwarming seeing kids as little as eight years old playing cricket and having fun.”
Ronel won Woman of the Match and Devanish was named Man of the Match.
UTP says they will be doing more such events each weekly.
