Retreat muso Matthew Sylvester, aka M.A.T.T, has released a new single that speaks about his mental health battle during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Matthew, 25, and his wife Gabriela Correa Da Silva, 26, relocated to her home town in São Paulo, Brazil on 18 August.
But he says a month before the move, he suffered a breakdown.
“I have been seeing all these posts about the pandemic and how Covid has been affecting people not only in South Africa but also worldwide,” he says.
“As I scrolled through social media daily, I started to realise that that was all I saw in the feeds, whether it was Instagram or Facebook.
“That’s when I subconsciously started to get anxiety, thinking what if I die of Covid? What about my family, and that’s when my health started to deteriorate.
“The anxiety mashed with the stress and then created a stomach ulcer which was eating me from inside. I never knew what I was going through until I saw a doctor.”
As part of his healing and meditations, the rapper, songwriter and producer wrote a Hip Hop song called Free.
“The song speaks about allowing your mind to be free, taking it back to the days when we were kids and having a carefree approach. Because a free mind allows happiness and brings that peace to the body,” says Matthew.
The catchy song was released on Friday and is available on all digital platforms.
