Radio 2000’s Kia Johnson is one of 12 powerhouse female DJs selected for the Strawberry Lips DJ campaign, called Sweet Beats.
Kia and two other female deck wreckers from Cape Town - Kimmy K and Abby Nurock - will be part of the nationwide campaign to play in Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg and Pretoria where they will mentor upcoming girl DJs.
Organisers say the campaign, which will run for 12 months, is all about girl power and sisterhood through sound.
Kia first started in the DJ industry seven years ago but took a break in between to have her two children.
She says her kids are her biggest fans: “Any child loves music and my kids are no different, they enjoy themselves so much when Mom spins it up on the decks.
“Sometimes my six-year-old asks me for requests. We have our own studio so when the music goes on they push the couches aside, creating their own dance floor and start dancing to my beats. “We’ve made it a family experience and because of that, it’s brought about just the right kind of balance.”
She says it’s a fine balancing act between being a mom and a DJ.
“Working late nights in clubs or at events takes me away from them, but they are so resilient and understanding. I do make sure to take time off to get some extra quality family time in.”
Kia, Kimmy K and Abby Nurock will be out at the Madison Avenue in Cape Town on 11 January.
