Elsies River has been in the news for all the wrong reasons lately.
Due to gang violence and drugs, this community has been plagued with murders, shootings, and robberies.
But as always, good people and talent shines through, and this rapper is setting out to prove that there is always hope in the darkest of times.
Mogamat Yazeed Bassier, aka MYB, is a 27-year-old hip hop artist with a passion to tell his stories through music.
He has released an EP album called Live Long & Prosper and also performed at various festivals and events across Western Cape.
He says falling in love with hip hop at the age of 17 changed his life for the best.
“At the time, I grew attached to hip hop music when I became a dancer. I was inspired by Eminem, Jay Z, Proverb and other international rappers,” explains Yazeed.
“I knew this was what I was destined for and with all the challenges I faced in my community, I clung to this dream of excelling in the music industry.”
Currently signed on with Vision Music Records in Atlantis, he has just released his latest single called 8 Bars, about the music world and how it impacts on his life.
He says more music will be released over the festive season.
The young entrepreneur also runs his own trading business in Cape Town.
Yazeed says he started out recording music in a room and at the time was working as a machine operator at a wood company.
He managed to save enough to record his music in a proper studio.
“My dream is to one day be a successful musician and inspire others to live their dream too, while also to make a difference in the community.”
8 Bars was produced by Vision Music Records with Laurenzo Davids, the brother of Idols SA winner Sasha Lee Davids, and Ralph Johannes, and is available on Soundcloud and Google Play Music.
