A Bishop Lavis dance crew showed mense just how kwaai they are at poppin’ and lockin’ as they won third place at the Hip Hop International SA dance competition on Saturday at the CTICC.
The four-man crew called BTS (Break The Silence) was established just over a year-and-a-half ago and has been making a name for themselves on the dance scene.
Group leader and choreographer, Christopher Adams, 28, says they worked hard to prepare for this competition.
“We competed against 45 other crews and made it to third place which was incredible.
“We practised hard and tried practising at least two to three times a week for about four to five hours, as two of us work and the others are still in school,” Christopher says.
The other members are Rufus Koopman, 18, Mark Freeman, 16, and Brendan Williams, 23.
The crew participated in other big competitions on the Cape Flats earlier this year.
“We took part in two dance competitions in Mitchells Plain and one in Elsies River. We walked away with two gold, silver and now we have a bronze.
“Next year we hope to take our competition to a higher level and enter on the international platforms,” Christopher explains.
The crew, who hope to inspire the youth of Bishop Lavis, says they will be recruiting dancers in the new year.
“Next year we are definitely recruiting so we can get bigger and better. We’re from Bishop Lavis where many things happen daily and we hope that by recruiting youth from our area, we can change their mindsets to following the right path. We hope to get parents on board too,” Christopher adds.
