Singer Ashur Petersen released his fourth single yesterday.
The song Legacy was released and features the vocals of Tashreeq de Villiers.
The 28-year-old son of late music legend Taliep Petersen tells the Daily Voice that the song is about where he’s at in his life.
“It speaks about the expectations people have of me and how I am compared so much to my father,” he reveals.
“In the song it says ‘All my life I’ve been trying to live up to your name, So afraid of putting all of that to shame, I believe in my heart you will see, That it’s heavy on me and I feel the pressure constantly, I look up to you, hoping that you see me too, Always told you that one day I’m going to be like you, Find a way to incorporate styles of today, Times have changed but in my heart, you will remain.’”
Ashur, from Athlone, explains how he and Tashreeq came up with the song:
“We worked together on Satin to Sequins in 2018, he came to the studio and we brainstormed.
“I had this rough beat for Legacy, we have been working on this since 2018.
“I told TDV I’m not good with lyrics, so we co-wrote the song.
“I told him my story of how this industry made me feel, we made it into a song and now it’s finally ready.”
His previous singles are Dance With Me, A Thousand Life Times and Sound of Cape Town.
“It feels good to be releasing this single.
“I’m always scared to release new music as I feel very self-conscious about it.”
The song is available for download on all digital platforms.
