There’s a new face in Ruiterbosch and she will be as familiar to you as your neighbour next door.
This week, Jawaahier Petersen, the eldest child of music icon Taliep Petersen, makes her debut on Suidooster, playing the role of Kaashifa Mansour.
Kaashifa is Mymoena’s biggest fan and has been following her idol’s Hallie-Happies videos online.
She has a great passion for cooking and quickly gets immersed in the Samsodien family.
Wilmer Miller from Suidooster says: “As a lonely person, who is rather socially awkward, she thrives on affirmation and is a bit desperate for a sense of belonging and validation.”
Jawaahier says she’s very excited to make her appearance on the popular Kaapse soapie.
“I’ve had to keep this role a secret since December last year!
“I’ve auditioned for this role four times and I am excited to finally be a part of such a great cast,” says the 33-year-old mom of two.
She reveals that she’s always had dreams of becoming an actor but her late father advised against it.
“I wanted to study drama but my dad said no, which I understood because there is unpredictability in the industry and the roles for people of colour are limited.”
She eventually pursued a degree in social work at UCT and pays tribute to other actors of colour who paved the way for people like her.
“From the time of our roles just being that of the garden boy or the tea girl, we can now be part of the leading cast members,” she says proudly.
Suidooster is on kykNET channel 144 at 6.30pm Monday to Friday.
