Claire Foy fought back tears as she picked up the Primetime Emmy Award for Leading Actress in a Drama Series on Monday (September, 17, 2018).

The 34-year-old actress was honoured for her role as Queen Elizabeth in ' The Crown' and dedicated her win to her on-screen husband Matt Smith, who played Prince Philip.

Claire, who like Matt has bowed out of the show after two series as it moves ahead in time, was emotional as she said: "I was given a role I never thought I would ever get a chance to play and I met people I will love forever and ever end.

"I dedicate this to the next cast, the next generation, and I also dedicate this to Matt Smith."

Claire also paid tribute to her fellow nominees, ' The Americans' Keri Russell, 'Killing Eve' actress Sandra Oh, ' Orphan Black' star Tatiana Maslany, ' The Handmaid's Tale's Elisabeth Moss and 'Westworld' actress Evan Rachel Wood.

She said: "This wasn‘t supposed to happen. I just felt so proud then of being in the company of such extra performances."

Talking about the representation of women in television, she added of the nominees: "If that's anything to go by, bloody hell."

Meanwhile, Matthew Rhys picked up his first Emmy for his portrayal of Philip Jennings in the final season of spy saga ' The Americans'.

The 43-year-old actor picked up Lead Actor in a Drama Series - the third time he's been nominated for the role in the show - and paid tribute to series creator Joe Weisberg on stage at Los Angeles' Microsoft Theatre after beating out ' This Is Us' actors Sterling K. Brown and Milo Ventimiglia, 'Ozark's Jason Bateman and ' Westworld' stars Ed Harris and Jeffrey Wright to take the prize.

He said: "Parts like these come along so rarely. I will forever be in your doubt."

And the Welsh star also paid a touching tribute to his partner and ' Americans' co-star Keri.

He said: "To the woman who truly got me this award who just stands in front of me every day and puts up with me she said, 'If you propose to me I will punch you clean in the mouth,' I don't have the word I don't have the time none of which do you justice...more to come, thank you."
