Artist Mandla “Mampintsha” Maphumulo has been granted R2000 bail in the Pinetown Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.
The musician was arrested yesterday afternoon after a video of him allegedly abusing his girlfriend, gqom queen Bongekile “Babes Wodumo” Simelane, 24, went viral in the early hours of Monday morning.
Mampintsha, 36, has been instructed by the court to have no contact with Babes. The State has revealed the gqom artist has been moved to a different location since the incident.
Maphumulo, who appeared in court with an apparent injury to his right foot, has laid a counter-charge of assault against Simelane, reports NCA.
The State proposed 15 May as the next court date.

Babes shared the ‘abuse’ on Instagram.
Meanwhile, a media statement purporting to have been issued by Babes and Mampintsha making the rounds on social media, claims the abuse video was a “pre-planned domestic violence video clip”.
The statement went on to say the video was done by both parties and was “planned thoroughly” and that “no one was hurt in the process”.
But Babes’ dad, the Reverend Welcome Simelane, slammed Mampintsha’s statement and called him a liar.
“He says my child is acting when everyone can see she is being beaten. The newspapers must take this up, Mandla is lying,” he told IOL on Monday.

“I want him to go to jail. I need (KZN Community Safety MEC Mxolisi) Kaunda to act. My child is being beaten and I know Mandla, he will go and pay the police,” said the angry father.
He said Babes was removed from the couple’s Westville home at 2.30am on Sunday when the artist’s friends alerted the family to the alleged assault.
“The police said we must come back ... but the claims that my daughter is acting are lies. What must Mandla do next for people to see? He is going to kill my daughter if the police do not do anything,” he said.
