Cape Town was a hive of activity at the weekend. So much so that you could be forgiven for thinking it was still festive season.
There was the Pride Festival in Green Point and the Southern Mail Wynberg Family Festival at Maynardville. But the biggest jo l of all took place at the Meerendal Wine Estate in Durbanville on Saturday.
Over 17 000 people stieked uit for the Huawei KDay music festival, to experience some of the biggest names in South African entertainment.
Fifteen huge acts performed, including AKA, Jimmy Nevis, Paxton Fielies, Craig Lucas, Matthew Mole, Shekhinah, Timo ODV, Gangs of Ballet, YoungstaCPT, Mi Casa, Locnville, DJ Kent, Freshly Ground, Brandon Leigh and more.
Singer Lebo Sekhoto, 28, from Observatory raised the curtain and says she was overcome with excitement. Lebo won the chance to open at the show after entering Huawei’s Dream It Possible competition.
“This was huge, I almost went blank because of excitement. It was an unbelievable experience,” Lebo said.
Elsies River singer Craig Lucas became emotional as he performed to the crowd who sang along to his songs.
“I can’t believe that such a huge audience sang along to my songs,” he said.
Craig was also surprised to learn that his single Smother featuring the 2017 SA Idols winner Paxton reached number one on the KFM Top 40 chart.
“I finally felt validated, like I was a part of the industry,” he said.
As usual, rapper YoungstaCPT blew the crowd away with his energetic vocal acrobatics.
He recalled his first KDay experience in 2009, when he was a member of the audience.
“That was the last big event I attended with my father before he passed away,” he shared.
“I remember thinking, I could top all the acts that were on stage that day, and look at me now, performing to the masses who sing along to my music.”
