Over 10 000 people crammed into Newlands Cricket Stadium for the first ever HeartFM Cape Town Music Festival held on Saturday.
Gates opened at 8am and the event started at 10am, but the mense were so excited, they didn’t mind standing in the queue since 6am.
Mandy and Felicia Kemp from Manenberg are loyal Heart listeners and say they were of the first people to enter.
“We bought our tickets immediately when we heard about the festival. There was no way we were going to miss this one, and so we arrived at 6am to get a spot next to the stage,” said Mandy.
On a lekker sunny day, the crowd was blown away by the line-up of over 20 performers including Jimmy Nevis, Youngsta CPT, Marc Alex, Prime Circle, Craig Lucas, AKA, Cassper Nyovest, Sketchy Bongo, Tresor, Dr Victor & The Rasta Rebels, Mango Groove, Die Heuwels Fantasies, Nasty C, Emo Adams, Sasha-Lee Davids, Alistair Izobell, Salome, Kurt Darren, Chad Saaiman, Jarrad Ricketts, Airborne and The Black Ties.
Voice SA winner Craig Lucas was so overwhelmed by the experience, that he was brought to tears while performing his hit song Smother.
“I was just amazed that I was given this opportunity to perform to such a huge amount of people who really appreciated my music... I just cried while singing!”
SA’s number one lyricist YoungstaCPT brought the house down with his kwaai performance of rap and freestyle flow. The teeny boppers went bos.
Fans weren’t impressed with AKA’s set as all his songs were performed on Autotune.
Sadly, there were also jeers for Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille, who took to the stage briefly to greet the crowd.
Mense started to boo Aunty Pat who was already stumbling over her words.
Eventually, she managed to win over the crowd by saying: “Thank you for not drinking water, for drinking wine.”
The crowd burst out in laughter before the mayor minced off the verhoog.
Nevertheless, the festival was dope.
