Western Province did not look like a side capable of winning the Currie Cup in their narrow 30-28 win over Boland, with coach John Dobson describing Friday night’s performance as “very poor”.
The good news for WP is that they are set to get some reinforcements for the match.
With the Springboks possibly available for the playoffs, he might be able to call on nationally contracted players such as Eben Etzebeth, Damian de Allende and Pieter-Steph du Toit, while non-contracted players such as Juan de Jongh and Bongi Mbonambi will almost certainly return to the team for the Lofus clash.
Then there are the likes of Dewaldt Duvenage and Huw Jones, who missed the match against Boland with injury, while long-term krukkelys stars such as Oli Kebble, JD Schickerling, Sikhumbuzo Notshe and even Jean-Luc du Plessis might all recover in time for the clash.
Dobson, though, says: “We have to make decisions on how fit they are.”
His captain, Chris van Zyl, says they will take the two weeks leading up to the game to take a good look at themselves and adds: “It’s great to have this week and look hard at ourselves to make sure it doesn’t happen again.
“There are no excuses, we’re here [in the semis] and it’s now whatever it takes [to win the tournament gold].”
