A young woman was shot and wounded by suspected gangsters in what appears to be a case of mistaken identity.
The 29-year-old Bonteheuwel woman’s boyfriend was walking her home when two suspects opened fire on them from behind.
While her boyfriend escaped unharmed, she was shot in the leg.
Police spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk says a case of attempted murder has been opened.
“A shooting incident in Boekenhout Street, Bonteheuwel, at about 8.45pm where a 29-year-old female was injured is under investigation,” Van Wyk says.
“An attempted murder case was opened.”
Meanwhile, a relative of the victim says it’s possible that she was mistaken for someone else.
“She was walking with her boyfriend and the [attackers] watched them from across the road and followed them,” the man says.
“They were shot from behind so they don’t even know who it was.
“On Saturday night, a man was shot dead a short distance from here and he was also with his girlfriend.
“I suppose she saw everything and they [attackers] know that she is a witness and now they probably want to kill her.
“It could be that they are after that woman now.
“That woman and [the victim] look alike and that is possibly why they shot at her,” the man adds.
No one was arrested.
