LAUNCH: Walking Bus in Lenteguer.

Western Cape Minister for community safety launches Walking Bus initiative.

Mitchells Plain learners were given their smoothest and perhaps safest trip to school after the Walking Bus initiative was launched by Western Cape Minister for community safety, Dan Plato, yesterday.

The initiative, which has already taken off in Delft, involves parents collecting and walking kids to school every day, with the help of neighbourhood watches and community policing forums.

Hundreds of moms and dads instantly joined the Lentegeur Walking Bus, volunteering their time to keep their neighbourhoods safe.

Plato urged the community members to keep up the initiative.

“The community of Lentegeur, like many other communities across the province, face many problems of which crime, gangsterism and drugs are of great concern,” he says.

“The community of Lentegeur, however, is a resilient community who regularly partner with the Department of Community Safety through the different programmes available to help increase safety in the community.”

The Walking Bus will assist kids from Lentegeur High, Meadowridge Primary, Cornflower Primary, Lantana Primary and Hyacinth Primary.
