Rescuers used visolie to save a little girl who was trapped inside a steel pipe.
The cooking oil, donated by residents, helped to ease an eight-year-old girl from a steel pipe she climbed into near Port Shepstone on Tuesday.
Robert McKenzie of KwaZulu-Natal Emergency Medical Services said the girl was trapped inside an unused upright steel pipe used to protect a tap from damage.
McKenzie said: “It took us 45 minutes to assess the situation.”
Locals gave the rescuers cooking oil to assist in the rescue and they poured it around her body.
“We slowly manoeuvred her legs. Then we delicately moved other parts of her body until she slipped out of the pipe.”
The girl suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene.
