US cop gifts Ceres boy with running shoes

OVERJOYED: Douglas, left and US cop give Jade his new shoes

The Californian officer read about the 12-year-old "Cheese Runner" in an American newspaper.

The laaitie who made news headlines when a cop gave him a lift as he ran home kaalvoet with cheese in the sweltering heat, got a big surprise when an overseas visitor gave him a pair of running shoes.

Ceres cop Andries Douglas gave 12-year-old Jade Manus a lift when he noticed the boy running barefoot in 40 degree heat in January taking cheese to his mom before it melted.

A California cop read about the story and decided to surprise Jade with two pairs of takkies when he visited Douglas in South Africa this week.

Douglas says he was amazed when his friend David Bailey told him he had read the story in an American newspaper and insisted on meeting the young “Cheese Runner”.

“And when we saw Jade he was wragtig alweer kaalvoet (barefoot again),” laughs Douglas.

Jade says he was excited about his visitor.

“Meeting him has inspired me to also travel when I’m big,” says the Grade 7 learner.

Jade, who admits he prefers running barefoot, says he will use the takkies for sport.

“In summer my feet burn when I run barefoot,” he laughs.

Bailey left for Paris yesterday morning and was unable to talk to the Daily Voice.

Douglas says his friend enjoyed his visit and went shark cage diving in Mossel Bay and bungee jumping off the Bloukrans Bridge.
