Traffic authorities had their hands full over the past two days with a number of accidents leaving at least two motorists dead and several others injured.
In the latest incident, a truck driver crashed when it overturned on the Hex River Pass between De Doorns and Touws River at approximately 4am on Wednesday.
According to Western Cape Provincial Traffic spokesperson Jacques Mostert, it is believed the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the mountain.
“When rescue workers lifted the head of the truck they discovered one man lying underneath it.
“The police will investigate a case of culpable homicide,” he adds.
The pass was closed for a short while as rescue workers cleared the scene.
Authorities were also kept busy on the N2 between Riversdale and Swellendam on Wednesday when another truck driver lost control of his vehicle.
“The vehicle left the road. No serious injuries were reported,” says Mostert.
A third truck driver was lucky to escape with his life after his vehicle rolled down an embankment on the Piekenierskloof Pass near Ceres on Tuesday.
“The driver sustained only minor injuries,” says Mostert.
In a fourth accident on Tuesday on the Mitchell’s Pass between Ceres and Worcester, one woman died while two people were critically injured and seven others sustained less serious injuries in a head-on collision between a car and a bakkie.
