Two big knocks for Boks

OUT: Jannie du Plessis

Du Plessis and Vermuelen pull out of European Tour.

Jannie du Plessis has become the latest experienced Springbok to withdraw from the squad ahead of their tour to Europe.

After No.8 Duane Vermeulen pulled out, it was announced yesterday that Du Plessis has also
withdrawn from the squad because of
personal reasons.

Coach Allister Coetzee explains: “Jannie still has a burning desire to be part of the Springboks.

“However, due to his current personal circumstances, he unfortunately had to withdraw..”

That wasn’t the only blow for the Boks, as flanker Jaco Kriel is also unavailable for the tour after he suffered a knee injury while playing in Japan.

The duo will be replaced by Lourens Adriaanse and Nizaam Carr respectively.

Meanwhile, Mark Alexander, who was appointed Saru President yesterday, is confident about the future of Bok rugby.

Of transforming the game, Alexander says: “Transformation for us is not a ‘tick box’ exercise; it is a business imperative for rugby to stay vibrant and relevant as a sport in an evolving South Africa.”
