The annual Twitter Blanket Drive is back, and ready to get Cape Town warm this winter.
It’s the 7th year of the charity drive, where people tweet to donate a blanket.
They follow up on their tweets by dropping off a kombers at one of several points around the city.
The blanket donation can also be used as a ticket to get into a lekker jol.
Organiser Merentia van der Vent says there’s never been a better time to marry the digital world with charity.
She says: “With winter around the corner, we know that charities struggle to try and meet the demand for blankets for the underprivileged. But in today’s digital world, we have the power to make that change.”
Merentia says the Blanket Drive has grown in leaps and bounds, thanks to the immediacy of Twitter, and word of mouth.
“A friend of mine just now referred me to a woman who was looking for blankets. The woman’s name is Diane and she is from Delft. She has three 14-year-old girls [triplets] and because they don’t have enough blankets they are forced to sleep on one bed because it is too cold, and she wanted to ask for blankets,” she says.
Moments later, singer Rouchelle Ludemann donated blankets to help Diane, and Merentia could deliver it immediately.
“I had the blankets in my car and the woman cried when I handed it over to her… I also shed a tear,” Merentia says.
It all started six years ago when @melanieminnaar posted a Tweet suggesting it would be a good idea if the SA Twitter community donated blankets to those in need.
The blankets are distributed to the homeless, people in shelters and at old age homes.
You can drop off your contribution today at the Protea Fire and Ice Hotel in the CBD. Chad Saaiman, The Black Ties, Opposite the Other, Candice Thornton and DJ Vernon Carver will provide entertainment.
Merentia says this year there are also Twitter Blanket Drives in Port Elizabeth, Uitenhage, Despatch and Grahamstown to spread the love.
The team at Heart 104.9 FM has donated 20 blankets, and challenged other radio stations to equal or better their contribution.
