Cops investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of a one-year-old boy at crèche.

Police are investigating after a one-year-old toddler died at a crèche.

The little one was found hanging by his backpack on a railing at the crèche in Kraaifontein on Friday.

The circumstances surrounding the incident at the Sinothando Educare in Wallacedene are still unclear but according to police, the toddler’s body was discovered by one of his teachers shortly before 10am.

Captain FC van Wyk says an inquest docket has been registered for investigation.

“Kraaifontein SAPS Detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a one-year-and-10-month old boy,” he says.

“According to available information, a teacher at the Educare Centre in Wallacedene found the boy on Friday at about 9.39am.

“The boy was hanging from his backpack on a railing.”

The Department of Social Development’s spokesperson, Esther Lewis says they will investigate the matter.

“The Minister is always concerned about incidents of this nature and the department will investigate and offer support where it can,” she says.

The Daily Voice spoke to the crèche owner yesterday, who didn’t want to comment without the boy’s parents’ permission.

The parents were not available for an interview because they were at the morgue to identify their child’s body.
