The Blitzbokke are not getting carried away with thoughts of the Olympics just yet.
Defensive dik ding Kwagga Smith says that while they are building towards the inaugural tournament in Rio de Janeiro in August, they have to get their game right.
And he says he and his teammates are only focusing on the here and now with the two final tournaments of the World Sevens Series being their last chance for competitive preparation.
And ahead of the Paris Sevens, he says: “As a team we want to take it step by step and not think too far ahead and think of the next tournament [and Rio].
“We are only focused on England.
“We need to do our best here and then build up to the Olympics.
“I think Rio definitely plays in a role in our preparations for this tournament.
“But we are only focusing on this tournament. Rio is still far away and we can focus on that when we get there. We need to get our processes right for Rio.”
Smith has been one of the key players for the Boks since his introduction to the squad under Neil Powell three seasons ago.
His tackling and never-say-die attitude are the hallmark of his game.
And he believes the experience he has gained on the circuit has helped him improve his allround performances consistently.
He adds: “I’m very happy with the experience that I picked up over the last three years.
“And to play with the best players in SA. It’s the best to measure myself against the best players this weekend and it’s another opportunity to use that experience.”
