Stormers laaities in line for Bloem starring roles

MASSIVE PROSPECT: Damian Willemse in line for Super start

The Stormers have a dilemma at flyhalf heading into Saturday’s Super Rugby encounter against the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein.

With both Robert du Preez and Jean-Luc du Plessis ruled out for the rest of the campaign, the most senior playmaker currently at the franchise is Kurt Coleman.

And the 27-year-old will in all likelihood be the one trusted to wear the No.10 jumper in Bloemfontein this weekend.

Unless, of course, coach Robbie Fleck goes the bold route.

That would mean a starting berth for SA U20 star Damian Willemse.

Having made his Super Rugby debut earlier this year against the Kings, Willemse is one of the brightest young flyhalves in the country.

At 19, though, it will be a risk if Fleck decides to start him and do so for the rest of the campaign.

But in Willemse they have a flyhalf that can win you a game with a touch of brilliance and if the Stormers want to look to the future, this is the route they should go.

His ability to play in the centre of the park as well, will possibly see him play off the bench against the Cheetahs this weekend.

Another option for Fleck will be to select Brandon Thomson, who is a little more experienced than Willemse at that level.

The latter, though, isn’t the only Baby Bok that might come into the reckoning when Fleck announces his squad for the clash today.

World Junior Player of the Year, Juarno Augustus, is in the form of his life and should be given a chance to show what he can do in the southern hemisphere showpiece.

Augustus, though, will have to compete against the likes of Sikhumbuzo Notshe and Nizaam Carr for a place in the starting XV, or even on the bench.

But as they head into the playoffs, Fleck would be wise to test his depth and that means to give the rookies a shot at the big time.
