CHALLENGE: Bafana Bafana

Bafana called to lift game to the next level.

Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter has called on his players to step up their game.
The boss says he will change his approach in the upcoming Chan qualifiers this weekend and up the tempo and urgency from his expectations from the recent Cosafa Cup tournament.

Ahead of the Cosafa Cup, Baxter said that he would use the competition for development reasons.

And now the Brit wants his manne to be more efficient ahead of Saturday’s first-leg clash against Botswana in Francistown (3.30pm).

He says: “This one will be a bit more tactical, and by that I mean it will be more about efficiency than looking at just development.

“We are going there to play solidly without playing defensively, we are going to make sure that we are a constant threat to them and we will make sure that we get a result that brings them to South Africa with us having a chance to put the tie away.”

Baxter retained some of his Cosafa Cup players – captain Lehlogonolo Masalesa, Tercious Malepe, Jamie Webber, Mario Booysen, Cole Alexander, Boalefa Pule, Riyaad Norodien, Sandile Mthethwa and Mothobi Mvala.

But with a number of new call-ups, like striker Ryan Moon, Stellenbosch FC defender Junaid Sait and SuperSport United ace Teboho Mokoena, he says he wants his players to learn quickly.

Baxter adds: “But we won’t give away the option to invest time into good young players – it is a balancing act.

“You don’t want to go there and lose, at the same time you don’t want to go there and play your strongest and most experienced team where you will walk away with a 1-1 result and not learn anything.”

The former Kaizer Chiefs and SuperSport United mentor is also expected to finalise his backroom staff after the weekend’s game, with Afcon qualifiers coming up next month.

He says: “I have made recommendations we have spoken but we have not been able to put things to bed. You need time for these things, to sit down and have a meeting.”
