Philander is ready for starring role at Lord’s

PREPARED FOR BATTLE: Protea Vernon Philander

Vernon “Pro” Philander is ready for a full-on return to action for the Proteas in the first Test against England at Lord’s today (noon).

And he is hoping it will be one for the video recorder.

Last time out at the home of cricket, the 32-year-old claimed the Man of the Match award after bagging seven wickets in total as South Africa beat England by 51 runs back in 2012.

Pro, though, has not played Test cricket since March but the bra from Ravensmead is confident that he can repeat the feat from 2012.

After South Africa already lost the T20I series, Philander explains: “It’s a new format so we start on 0-0.

“It’s a format we always do well in so the guys are looking forward to it while there is a lot of new energy in the team so hopefully guys step up and take their chances.”

Philander, who will probably partner Kagiso Rabada with the new ball, missed South Africa’s warm-up game due to an ankle injury.

But the former world No.1 says he is ready to go and that the rest of the span is also prepared.

He adds: “The way the guys have been training over the last week has been phenomenal to see.

“We played the warm-up match in Worcester, guys got some time out in the middle and everyone looked good.”

SA did not have the best preparations for the series, which could give the likes of Joe Root and Ben Stokes some encouragement, but Philander is min gepla over the Poms and their confidence.

He continues: “We’ve got to take 20 wickets to win a game, 10 an innings, and the value of those wickets are all the same.

“I know the top order are guys you want to get early but whether it’s Joe Root, Alastair Cook or whoever is playing we just have to take 10 wickets.”
