Norodien wants more caps after final

DETERMINED: Riyaad Norodien

Bafana Bafana midfielder Riyaad Norodien believes another good performance in tonight’s Cosafa Cup Plate final will lead to more caps (kickoff 5pm).

South Africa take on Namibia in Moruleng – their third game of the tournament after failing in the Cup quarterfinals against Tanzania last Sunday.

Norodien has been the stand-out player in the Gold and Green, scoring the opener in the 2-0 Plate semifinal win over Botswana on Tuesday and was also SA’s main threat in the opener.

And the former Ajax Cape Town man reckons that another impressive display by him and his teammates could land them in coach Stuart Baxter’s plans for the 2018 World Cup and 2019 Afcon qualifiers.

Norodien tells IOL: “We just need to continue working hard and keep raising our hands in each and every opportunity we get.

“We want to be called-up in [more important] Bafana fixtures but what’s key for each and every one of us is to make sure that maintain the hunger and the desire to play for the senior national team so that the coach [consider them in the future].”

“It’s always going to be tough whether you are playing in a friendly or a competitive match [for the senior national team].

“If we do that, I truly believe that we can dismantle teams quite easily like we did in our match against Botswana.

“We created several scoring opportunities and could have scored more, if only we could have had a little more composure in front of goal.”

Baxter will get a good look at his players from the stands again due his touchline ban after he was sent off in SA’s last match and will play youngsters.

The Brit adds: “We have to stay true to what we set out to do with the Cosafa Cup – and that is to invest a lot of international experience and give the youngsters these sort of experiences.

“When young players play a game like that in a national shirt, it is good investment..

“It’s like treading a fine line – you don’t want to throw them into the deep end but also you don’t want to deprive them of the chance.”

Meanwhile, midfielder Cole Alexander will not feature in the final after he was recalled by SuperSport United for tomorrow’s Confederations Cup clash against Mounana.
