City's Tinkler says title race still on after draw

Cape Town City boss Eric Tinkler believes the PSL title race is still wide open.

City played to a 1-1 draw with Wits on Wednesday night, which left the Cape side top of the log but with Wits just one point behind with two games in hand.

That means the Students can move five points clear of their rivals if they win those games.

But Tinkler reckons that is a big IF, judging by the remaining fixtures in the league.

Wits have to play most of their title rivals in the run-in – SuperSport on Tuesday and Mamelodi Sundowns on May 1.

City also have their trials against Kaizer Chiefs next week and SuperSport on May 9.

Tinkler says: “They still have to play some very big games. In the back of his mind he probably wanted all three.

“If you look at the table right now, it’s tight all over. Obviously you don’t want to drop points, but I believe there are going to be points dropped this season.

“There are season were 56 points was enough to win the league.

“And this season I can’t see a team running away with it when you consider that everybody at the top still has to play everybody.

“Wits have to play Sundowns, Pirates who are showing good form now, and it’s going to be very tough.

“The points are important to everybody right now.”

Still, the boss believes his team could have gotten more from the game than just the single log point after Tshepo Gumede got City on level terms following Phakamani Mahlambi’s penalty opener.

The former Bafana Bafana midfielder adds: “We probably deserved more than a point with the chances we created.

“We knew that they would struggle a bit towards the end and we dominated the last 25 minutes of the match.

“We did well against them. They are a team built to win the league. They have a lot of names.”

“We would have preferred to get all the points here. But credit must go to the boys.”
