Locks Eben Etzebeth and Lood de Jager will have to kiss and make up before the Springboks take the field against Ireland at Newlands on June 11.
The Bok duo was the talk of the town following last weekend’s South African derby between Etzebeth’s Stormers and De Jager’s Cheetahs when they got down to a bit of wrestling action, shortly before the announcement of the Springbok squad for the Incoming Series.
But with Pieter-Steph du Toit having to withdraw from the national squad because of a hamstring injury, Etzebeth and De Jager will have to put their differences aside as they will most likely man the middle of the engine room when the Boks take the field for the first Test under coach Allister Coetzee.
Of the injury to Du Toit, Springbok assistant coach Johan van Graan says: “Pieter-Steph is unbelievably unlucky with injuries at the Springboks. He played his first two Tests at the end of 2013 and then had long injuries.
“He showed at the World Cup he will become one of the best locks in the world. I think he was outstanding in Super Rugby.
“So it’s a huge setback for him and for us. He was part of our plans and is still part of our plans…”
