Irish beating did not tenderise All Blacks

All Blacks boss Steve Hansen warns the British and Irish Lions it will be “a mistake” if they think they can do an Ireland.

Lions coach Warren Gatland has already tried to push the Kiwis’ buttons over Ireland’s five-try 40-29 win in Chicago last November.

Last month, he said: “…to see some of these world-class [All Black] players be human, make some mistakes, show some frailties – and that gives you self-belief and confidence”.

But Hansen says the Lions mustn’t think the world champions will be easy meat.

He says: “If the Lions are going to read too much into that, it would be a mistake. Because they are not Ireland, they are the Lions.

“It [defeat] was inevitable at some point for us. But then we would be ignoring the inconvenient fact that we didn’t play well.”
