Golden chance for golden pair

STILL IN IT: SA's Chad le Clos

Chad and Wayde chase first SA gold.

Team SA are still waiting for their first gold medal at the Rio Olympics.

So far South Africa only have two silvers to boast – Cameron van der Burgh’s 100m breaststroke and Chad le Clos’ 200m freestyle.

But that could change this weekend with Le Clos in action for the 100m butterfly and track superstar Wayde van Niekerk in the blocks.

After being humiliated by Michael Phelps in their 200m butterfly rematch, Chad is being backed to come good in the shorter version.

His coach Graham Hill says of Tuesday’s race: “At the 150m all was good, 1:23.3, that’s what we wanted it to be. But we’ve still got the 100 fly to come, and I’m sure [Chad] will be back and challenging on Friday night.”

CLASS ACT: Wayde van Niekerk

World champion Wayde begins his bid for Olympic gold in the 400m tomorrow with the final on Sunday.

And he says he knows what time he needs to run to get first place.

The Cape-born star says: “It’s a tough, classy field and the guys are looking sharp. Obviously a sub-44, it’s been shown every year that a sub-44 is what will take it. There are about four/five guys who’ve done it this far. So it’s going to be tough but hopefully I’ll be there with them.”
