DEFIANT: Boss Arsene Wenger

Wenger insists top four spot is possible

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger believes he can win over Gunners fans again if he manages to qualify the team for the Champions League.

And his road to recovery starts in their London derby against West Ham at the Emirates Stadium tonight (8.45pm).

Wenger, who has been on the receiving end from unhappy fans for a while now, says supporters only appreciate finishing in the top four now.

The Gunners are in sixth place in the Premier League – seven points behind fourth-placed Manchester City, but Wenger insists his side can still grab a Champions League spot.

Arsenal have never finished outside the top four under the Frenchman and he says: “It’s a good challenge but I think it’s certainly possible.

“For 20 years I have done it and it looked like nothing. Suddenly now it’s important and people realise it is not as easy as it looked.

“We are fighting to have a positive end of season. That’s why you want the fans to stand behind the team.”

Wenger adds that defender Laurent Koscielny, who was substituted at half time in their 2-2 draw with City last Sunday, suffered an Achilles injury and is a doubt for the clash against West Ham.

Skipper Per Mertesacker and midfielders Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Aaron Ramsey return from injury layoffs and could feature in the game as Arsenal look to avenge their first home defeat by West Ham in eight years after the visitors won 2-0 at the Emirates last season.
