CALLED UP: Springbok prop Coenie Oosthuizen.

While Coenie Oosthuizen has been called up as extra prop cover for the Springboks, Beast Mtawarira doesn’t believe there is much wrong with the national team’s scrums.

With Trevor Nyakane ruled out of the Ireland series decider in Port Elizabeth on Saturday because of an ankle injury, coach Allister Coetzee, who will name his side for the clash today, has roped in the 27-year-old Oosthuizen who already has 23 national caps to his name.

It is unlikely, though, that Oosthuizen will play any part in the match, with Coetzee possibly going with the quartet of Mtawarira, Frans Malherbe, Julian Redelinghuys and possible debutant Steven Kitshoff in his match 23.

And while Ireland put their scrum under pressure at times in the first two Tests, Mtawarira actually believes the South Africans are on the up.

He says: “Ireland have a formidable pack, but I think as a team we are improving.

“We could have performed better on their ball, but I really think we’ve scrummed well thus far. We also have to keep scrumming and work on our communication to know exactly when the ball is out.”

Of Kitshoff possibly coming in, the Beast adds: “Steven has been around for a while, he is an experienced loosehead now and I think going overseas has enabled him to learn a few tricks.

“We’re feeding off each other and I’m really excited to see him make his debut, I’m sure he’ll bring a lot of energy and be a real force on Saturday.”
