Allrounder Parnell stars as opener to boost SA’s chances

HE BATS TOO: Wayne Parnell

Since the days of Shaun Pollock and Lance Klusener ended, mense have always been talking about the allrounder in the Proteas span.

Wayne Parnell is the bra that has that role at the moment and the lefty really showed his worth while on tour in England after he klapped 61 off 42 balls against Sussex as an opener.

Parney is used to facing the first ball during his time with the Warriors and the Cobras.

But the 27-year-old does not get to do it that often in the Green and Gold, so when Hashim Amla was rested the allrounder took his chance.

He says: “I knew I was going to open coming into the game. Hashim was rested and I was the guy to take the place.

“I’m just happy that the coach had the faith in me and I that I had the chance to show what I can do.”

Coach Russell Domingo has used the Proteas’ two warm-up games this weekend as an audition for the allrounders as Parnell, Dwaine Pretorius, Andile Phehlukwayo, Farhaan Behardien and Chris Morris have all gotten time at the crease while playing against Sussex and Northamptonshire.

Parnell, though, is the only one that really stood out with his knock against Sussex, while Behardien has scored 39 in both matches.

Pretorius also scored 25 over the two matches, while Morris looked decent in his only outing with a 19-ball 26.

Parney, though, is confident the rest of the manne will step up for the Champions Trophy and even during the three match series against England prior to the top-eight showpiece.

The Cobras star adds: “We are pretty confident with our game and we will use that for the next few games.

“We have been playing some good cricket over the last 12 months so things are looking good.

“Some of the guys are in England for the first time so they must get used to the conditions here and some of the guys must have not played competitive cricket in a while so that is what these warm-up games are all about.”
