CONVERT: BLitzbokke's Tim Agaba

Like the rest of the Springboks Sevens squad, Tim Agaba is still pinching himself at the thought of being at the Olympics.

The hulking forward is a recent convert from the XV-man game.

Agaba is a back-row rampager with speed, physicality and a mean step; priceless attributes in the condensed world of Sevens.

But, though he looks a natural fit, Agaba admitted that the switch has been tough.

The Uganda-born giant says: “If you had asked me at the beginning of the year if I saw myself in the Springbok Sevens, I would have said no. Now we are here, at the Olympics! That alone is crazy! It’s just crazy.

“Things happened very quickly for me, and it is all down to the encouragement that I got from all these guys. I came in with close to no Sevens experience, but they have backed me and got me to this point,”

“The transition from XV to Sevens is not very easy.

“We’ve seen a lot of guys around the world have come from XVs, and they have not made it. I don’t think Sevens players get as much credit as they should.

“The biggest thing for me is the mindset. Rugby is rugby, but the mental side of Sevens puts them in a league of their own. You practise like its tournament day, and there is no holding back. It’s hard work, man.”
